Clinical Focus & Support

Common Concerns Families Face

Parents often reach out with specific worries rather than a diagnosis.
We use evidence-based methods to help you and your teen work through these patterns.

Screen, Gaming & Social Media Overuse

When unhealthy digital habits replace people and activities your teen once loved, it creates a silent distance at home. We help your teen find balance again, restoring balance through a supportive approach that avoids power struggles and shame.

Pornography & Compulsive Online Habits

Compulsive use of online content can quietly shape how your teen views intimacy and themselves. We address it directly with empathy and zero judgment, while helping your teen build a healthier, more grounded framework for connection.

Failure to Launch

When your teen seems to be retreating from independence or disengaged from school or work, it’s easy to feel helpless. We identify the source of their avoidance and partner with them to build a clear, realistic path toward autonomy and adult responsibility.

Hopelessness & Low Mood

Is your teen experiencing persistent flatness, pessimism, or a sense that nothing is worth the effort? We take these signs seriously, assess carefully, and work to rebuild a teen’s sense of agency and possibility. Where appropriate, we coordinate with family and other professionals.

Unrealistic Expectations & Perfectionism

Whether the bar is set impossibly high or abandoned entirely, distorted expectations fuel anxiety, avoidance, and conflict at home. We help teens develop a grounded, sustainable relationship with effort, achievement, and setbacks.

Unhealthy Models of Masculinity

Boys today are navigating a confusing mix of online and offline messages about manhood. We help your teen think critically about these influences, empowering them to step away from harmful pressures and cultivate a confident, healthy, pro-social sense of identity and purpose.

Practical Skills for Real World Re-Engagement.

Many parents arrive worn down, having watched their teen retreat into a screen, lose their motivation, and give up on their future. By the time families reach out, negative patterns have stuck and everyday conversations don’t come naturally anymore.

Cogent’s direct, structured approach prioritizes measurable results over indefinite talk. By identifying the root of the concern, we equip your teen with the practical skills and confidence to regain their momentum.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Teen Doesn't Want to Come. What Do We Do?

This is one of the most common concerns parents raise. We begin with a parent consultation to plan an approach, and our therapists are experienced at building rapport with reluctant teens. In many cases the first session is framed as a low-pressure conversation rather than “therapy.” Meaningful engagement usually follows.

How Involved Will I Be as a Parent?

Parents are essential partners. You’ll be involved at intake, kept appropriately informed, and given practical strategies for home. At the same time, teens need a degree of confidentiality to engage honestly. Your therapist will explain how this balance is handled at the outset.

How Many Sessions Will My Teen Need?

Treatment is structured and goal-directed rather than open-ended. Many teens make meaningful progress within 8–16 sessions, though this depends on the presenting concerns. An assessment in the first one to two sessions informs an individualized plan with clear goals.

Is This Therapy or an Assessment?

These are different services. This page is about therapy — structured treatment for the concerns above. If you suspect an underlying learning disability, ADHD, or Autism is contributing, a psychoeducational assessment provides formal diagnosis and documentation. We can help you determine which is the right starting point, and the two often work together.

Is Teen Therapy Covered by Insurance?

Many extended health benefit plans cover psychological services for dependents. Coverage varies by plan. Cogent provides receipts for insurance claims and in many cases can bill directly. Contact your provider to confirm your specific benefits.

Do You Offer Virtual Sessions?

Yes. Cogent provides both in-person sessions at our Guelph office and secure virtual sessions for teens across Ontario. Many teens engage well with virtual therapy. Evening and weekend appointments are available.

What If I'm Worried My Teen Is in Crisis?

If you are concerned about your teen’s immediate safety, contact your local emergency services or a crisis line right away rather than waiting for an appointment. Cogent provides structured therapy, not emergency crisis care. Once your teen is safe, we’re glad to be part of their ongoing support.
