EVIDENCE-BASED APPROACHES
We replace generic therapy with evidence-based techniques tailored to your concerns.
You’ll gain the practical skills needed to build a healthier, more resilient partnership together.
This is a structured, skills-based approach built on over 40 years of research. We use it to strengthen your friendship, deepen intimacy, and stop the specific conflict patterns that lead to relationship breakdowns.
This approach helps us identify the thought patterns and behaviours that keep you both in a loop. By addressing things like unrealistic expectations and negative cycles, we help you replace friction with clarity.
Building a strong foundation is key to a healthy long-lasting partnership. By exploring your values and communication styles, you’ll be able to identify potential friction areas and learn how to keep your connection strong.
EFT is designed to help you both reconnect on a deeper level. We work to identify negative cycles caused by distress, trauma, or emotional disconnection. From there we can build your bond and find security in your attachment to each other.
We use IBCT to help you balance growth and acceptance. By pairing practical strategies with a more understanding perspective, we help you resolve what you can and find common ground with what you cannot.
Healing after betrayal takes time and a steady guide. Our structured, phased approach helps you process the trauma of infidelity, giving you the space to either rebuild a stronger foundation of trust or to make a clear, informed decision about your future together.
The Gottman Method is an empirically validated couples therapy approach developed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, based on over 40 years of relationship research. It uses the Sound Relationship House framework to strengthen friendship, manage conflict, and create shared meaning — targeting the specific patterns most predictive of relationship breakdown.
Most couples complete 8–16 sessions. A structured assessment in the first one to two sessions informs an individualized treatment plan with clear goals and milestones. Cogent’s approach is time-limited by design — not open-ended.
Many extended health benefit plans cover couples therapy when delivered by a registered psychologist or psychotherapist. Coverage varies by plan. Cogent provides receipts for insurance claims. Contact your provider to confirm your specific benefits.
Joint sessions are the standard format. In some cases, particularly during assessment, individual sessions with each partner are conducted alongside joint sessions. Your therapist will outline the recommended format at intake based on your situation.
Individual therapy focused on relationship improvement is available when one partner is unwilling to attend. Work on communication, attachment patterns, and personal contribution to relational dynamics can create meaningful change even when one partner is not in the room.
Yes. Cogent provides both in-person sessions at our Guelph office and secure virtual sessions for couples across Ontario. Evening and weekend appointments are available. Research supports the effectiveness of virtual delivery for couple’s therapy.
