The Man Behind the Moustache

Every man knows it: the code. You know the one – it’s passed down from generations of men before us. It’s the script that runs automatically whenever you’re in a jam. Smile. Nod. Shoulder the weight. Say nothing. Hold it together, man. We call it strength. No matter how you feel inside, you put on a brave face. If you’re going down, you might as well look like the leading man.

These masks are helpful in the moment, but let’s be real. They get heavy over time. Behind the mask, the strain builds. It shows up in small ways: irritability with a colleague, snapping at someone you love, tension that lingers after a long day. You notice it quietly, in the moments no one else sees, and it starts to shape how you move through the world. You can’t wear a mask 24/7, so you take it off only when you feel safe and secure. Unfortunately, this means that those parts of us we don’t want others to see often come out at home, with those closest to us.

The Weight Of Being A Man

Over time, you start to feel like you’re walking through life with invisible weights strapped to your shoulders. You accomplish, you perform, you keep moving – but the tension never fully disappears. Outwardly, you project confidence. Inside, you’re struggling.

If any of this rings true, you’re not alone. We’ve been led to believe that’s what being a man is all about. Growing up, we’re told to “toughen up, grin and bear it, be a man”. We’re only allowed to express ourselves with anger, or pride, or humour; anything else is off the table. When it comes to our inner worlds, we’re all striving to be the ‘strong, silent type’.

Well, guess what? Staying silent is killing us. According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, men die by suicide nearly 4 times as often as women.

What Are We Waiting For?

Every time, we hear the same messages; open up, reach out, tell someone – but it still feels like nothing changes. It’s exhausting, and soul-crushing, and yet somehow we convince ourselves it’s normal. In reality, it’s the price we all pay to upkeep the status quo. We’ll keep our mask on, thank you very much, and hope that the next statistic isn’t a brother or a friend.

So, what are we going to do about it? As men, aren’t we supposed to be bold leaders, people of action, willing to face any and every challenge with a heart of steel? Or is that just reserved for the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Are we going to let men keep struggling, suffering, and dying before their time? Are we really going to be men who hide behind masks? Or are we going to be brave enough to take the mask off and simply ask a brother or friend how they’re really doing?

Change Starts With You

The truth is, change starts with each one of us. Acknowledging the weight you’re carrying the first step. Telling someone about it comes second. Yeah, it’s uncomfortable. It’s painful. You’ll feel some things you don’t like to feel. That’s all part of it. You don’t need to be perfect – you just have to decide to show up, pick up the shovel, and start digging. Sure, you’ll find some skeletons. But if you’re willing to continue showing up and doing the work, sooner or later, you might just strike gold.

If you’re ready to start the work, you don’t have to do it alone. We’re here, shovel in hand, ready to help. Cogent is built for men like you. Men who are willing to take off the mask, look in the mirror, and see themselves for what they truly are – human, imperfect, and redeemable.
